After filling the deer tag for pops, we have been focusing on getting a couple of bull elk on the general season with over the counter tags. No luck with that yet, but archery editor Shane Chuning hung up his bow on this trip and busted out his Thompson Center 300 win and made a great 375 yard shot on a 55 pound male yote. Definitely broke up the long day of looking for elk.

Day 3 of the hunt proved to be successful for the team. Dad harvested a 29″ wide muley that gross scores 182″. What a great buck, great footage, and a great day.

We harvested our first critter on the colorado trip. He falls just short of boone nand crocket but he was a must kill after getting into our cooler and eating some of my pumpkin satin pie as well as all of our tortillas.

I have always been a little bit jealous of those guys who can take a knife that has an edge that looks more like a butter knife than a precision piece of steel that can shave hair off your arm and have it doing just that in a matter of minutes. I’m not sure if it is my lack of patience or if my grandfather didn’t pass that knife sharpening chromosome down the DNA chain, but whatever it is, I don’t have it.

Already at the forefront of cutting edge technology, literally, Leatherman has taken their same innovative approach to design into the realm of folding knives. With their multi-tools, Leatherman built a toolbox around a pair of pliers. Now with their Expanse and Crater folding knives, the focus has shifted to a premium cutting blade with the addition of a few drivers to provide a compact, yet versatile tool that slips cleanly into a pocket.

In the world of adventure watches, few can do what the HRT from 5.11 can do. Yes, it does tell time, in a multitude of time zones, and has a multi-memory chronograph, alarm, timers, rotating bezel, digital and analogue display, calendar, and all of the other things you want in a quality timepiece.

Watches have come a long way from your grand daddy’s Timex that took a lickin’ and kept on ticken’. A watch of today is much more than your standard time piece, especially when you are talking about adventure watches. Some of these watches can calculate ballistic drop and wind drift of a bullet out past 1000 yards. They can also tell you the approximate sunrise and sunset time anywhere in the world. You can check the depth of your snorkeling dives and log them at the touch of a button. You can monitor the vertical feet that you climb on a daily basis when in pursuit of that trophy animal and the digital compass might just save your life and get you back to camp in blizzard conditions. They can warn you of a storm heading your direction and give you time to set up camp. Watches have come a long way over the years and if you spend a lot of time in the outdoors, it is a good idea to have one attached to your arm.

One of the most important protective steps any outdoorsman or woman can take is getting into the habit of wearing quality hearing protection while shooting.
Surefire, known the world over for their lighting products, has created the comfortable and form fitting EarPro Sonic Defenders hearing protectors. Molded from a soft hypoallergenic polymer, the Sonic Defenders allow normal conversations to be conducted while blocking out louder sounds that could cause hearing damage through the use of the Hocks Noise Brake Filter.

When I was growing up, Zeiss was the most prominent name in optics. They had the best glass out there and if you were any sort of hunter, you had better have yourself some Zeiss. Well, it is now 2010 and Zeiss is again coming on very strong with new technology and top of the line products. The PRF Laser Rangefinder is no exception.

What is a monocular? I’m sure that there are many people out there that are familiar with this term and have probably used the product in the past, but this is for all the rest of you and for the people who want to know a little more about the new products out there.

With hunting season just around the corner, it is time to take to the field and start looking for that next trophy of a lifetime. Quality optics is essential to success in the field and there probably isn’t a better known name in optics than Nikon. Nikon has been making top of the line camera equipment for over 90 years and a good majority of professional photographers depend on their glass for their livelihood. Nikon have taken that same great technology and plugged it into their sport optics as well and you won’t be disappointed in the quality of the new Monarch ATB Team REALTREE which we took to the test this month.

When you take to the woods with nothing but a trophy animal on your mind, I’m sure that you already know quality optics is the key to spending hours behind your glass and finding a trophy of a lifetime. I’m sure that there are many of you out there that feel you are capable of holding your binoculars still enough to do a good job of glassing with ten power binoculars. I still carry mine around my neck, but I have become a major believer in sitting behind my ten power binoculars mounted on a tripod for afternoon and evening glassing sessions. I don’t feel the fatigue of hold my glasses up and I do a much better job of gridding the mountain while I look for trophies. The results have been many more trophies found.

Anyone who has done much shooting with their AR platform rifle has wanted a great tactical scope to extend the range out to a distance. Most AR shooting is done at under a hundred yards, but the flat trajectory of the 5.56/.223 Remington cartridge makes it a great shooting round for distances up to 1,000 yards.

Growing up as a child shooting open sights on our .22′s made hundred yard shots seem like we were true experts when we connected. As we got older, we graduated to bigger calibers and learned how to acquire a target in a scope and then three and four hundred yard shots became possible. Eight years as a U.S. Marine and hundreds of hours on the long range with quality optics made thousand yard shots a possibility. This can only be done consistently with a lot of practice and understanding your weapon and scope.
