The Expanse Line offers a 154CM stainless steel blade that holds an edge like Trump holds a penny. Two of the Expanse line feature a single blade with a retractable carbineer clip that also doubles as a bottle opener. The smaller e33 comes with a 2.6-inch straight blade L model or the partially serrated LX model and features the Leatherman Blade Launcher to help open the blade quickly with one hand. An internal liner lock holds the blade open and allows it to be unlocked and closed with a flick of the thumb. The larger e55 line features the same clean design, but in a 3.1-inch blade with a lock back to provide a more rigid blade for sawing or prying. Like its little brother, the e55 is available in a serrated and straight blade version. The handle of the Expanse is reinforced with Stainless Steel to provide it with greater structural integrity and a sleek look and feel.
Both designs are available with additional tools; such as the e55B and e33B with a standard Leatherman bit driver or the e33T with fold out Phillips and standard screwdrivers.
The Crater line of Leatherman knives offers the same functionality as the Expanse, but is designed with lighter 420HC stainless steel and a glass filled nylon handle to further reduce the weight. Its slimmer design provides the user with more carry options with less bulk.
All of the knives feature a removable pocket clip, sturdy construction, and are available in a price range that won’t break the bank.
In our testing, both knives held their edge for days in the field, cutting rope, whittling wood, and slicing meat and veggies for dinner. A quick rub with a fine diamond stone had the blades back in tip-top condition in no time.
The Blade Launcher on the e33 and c33 models made opening the blade a snap, especially in tight quarters, and the inclusions of screwdrivers assured that emergency repairs could be made without sacrificing the knife tip trying to use it to remove a or tighten a screw. The models with a bit driver will accept standard optional Leatherman bit kits and the bit extender, providing even more versatility.
