Another great adventure for the Sportsman’s News Team in southeast Alaska with Laughing Raven Lodge, located about 65 miles south of Sitka in the tiny town of Port Alexander. What a beautiful setting and the fishing wasn’t too bad either! Watch for the full story is our September issue.

The Sportsman’s News team has spent 4 extremely productive days of fishing the Rio Grand river with Broadacres Ranch just outside of Creede Colorado. The area is know for some of Colorado’s best dry fly fishing and we proved it this week. Although we didn’t land any fish over 20 inches, it was a great success. This outfitter has been an Orvis Endorsed lodge for many years. We enjoyed world class cuisine as well 5 star lodging with our own private pond in the back yard. We finished the last day off with a special treat of hiking into some remote back country area for Brook Trout fishing. The experience was breathtaking. 12,000 foot peaks with gin clear water running through the meadows loaded with hungry Brookies. Our group of 5 people landed over 100 fish in 2 hours. It was the icing on the cake to a wonderful experience. Anyone looking for a fly fishing destination vacation, you can’t go wrong booking a trip with Broadacres Ranch.

We are happy to welcome Elk Island Lodge as our newest Platinum Approved Outfitter!

Two Hundred and Thirty Five Years Ago, this weekend, a group of traitors was turned into a group of patriots by the foundation of a Constitutional Republic. These men and women risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in the hopes of forming a nation of the people, by the people and for the people.
On this weekend bombs will burst in midair and the red glare of rockets will proclaim that we are still indeed free, and by the grace of almighty God we live in the greatest nation on Earth.
As we grill, and hit the sales and enjoy the parades, please pause to thank God that you are an American. Also, take a moment to pray for those brave fighting men and women who are far from home risking their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to keep us the great nation we are. Happy Birthday America!

It is hard to imagine that a person can actually hunt big bulls in the Velvet without being a governor type tag holder (not many can afford that these days). One of the Sportsman’s News Platinum Approved Outfitters has a great opportunity to do just that. Atkinson Expeditions has secured a great lease with lots of elk that fall under what is considered a “C” license in Colorado. A depredation type hunt for velvet bulls. The Sportsman’s News team will be headed to Colorado for our first elk hunt of the year. We have high expectations of getting a Colorado bull. We will be posting blog pages during the entire trip as well as “Forum” posts. Follow us along and let us know what you think about this amazing hunt.

The Sportsman’s News team gets a chance to test a lot of different gear each and every month and the items that really rise to the top get put on the schedule for our “Pros Pick” column. Since we only do 12 publications a year, we reserve these spots for some of the very best products that come across our desk. The 2011 Bear Carnage is just that type of product. Continue Reading

My wife and I like a good adventure. To qualify as a good adventure, it needs to have breathtaking scenery, lots of excitement, some unexpected events, good company, good food and be somewhat gentle on the budget. We are always on the lookout for a good hunting or fishing trip that we can also include some other type of adventure. After exploring the internet and devouring articles from the Sportsman’s News for most of 2009, I boldly announced to my wife we were heading back to Alaska to stock up on halibut and salmon and whatever else the ocean might feel charitable to give up. Our first trip together there in 2007 filled our freezer with wonderful Homer halibut fillets, but the supply was running low. Continue Reading

Are you like most of us around this time of year, finding yourself repeatedly going to the mail box only to get letter after letter with that most disheartening of words possible, “Unsuccessful”? Where do you turn when you’ve got that itch that can only be scratched with a hunting tag? Why not consider a landowner tag? Here at Worldwide Trophy Adventures we have hundreds of landowner vouchers or tags all across the West (referenced as “tags” throughout the rest of the article). Typically, having a landowner tag will allow you to hunt an area that you would normally only be able to hunt in if you drew a tag there in the regular draw process. Landowner tags give those of us that are used to seeing a lot of those “unsuccessful” letters a chance to hunt our favorite animals in our favorite states each year. States that do participate in some type of landowner tag program usually give the tags to the actual landowners or allow them to apply for those tags. The hard part is finding the tags! Most states do not publish which landowners actually have them for sale. Continue Reading

Do you have a dream of hunting, fishing or riding horses for a living? Does the sound of having a full scholarship to learn to become a professional guide sound good? Well, the opportunity is open if you have what it takes. Like anything worthwhile, it is not easy to get and keep this type of scholarship, but it might be a smoother path than getting and keeping a traditional educational scholarship. Continue Reading

Northern California has long been a leader on the world’s economic, scientific and cultural stages. The California Gold Rush first paved the way, agriculture kept it going, microchip technology again made it famous and some of the world’s most beautiful and unique landscape still make it one of the most special places you can visit. And in the midst of all of this, the fishing isn’t too bad either! Continue Reading
