When on the move for hunting, hiking, camping, or to escape a zombie horde, having a quick nutrient packed meal that requires no preparation can keep you ahead of the game and add miles to your journey.
Bridgford has created great Ready to Eat Sandwiches for those times when you have to eat on the run. The Ready to eat Sandwiches are little pockets of goodness surrounded by a sweet, soft, and moist bread wrapper.
The sandwiches come in three flavors, honey barbecued chicken, honey barbecued beef, and Italian. We tested each of them out by, well, eating them, and found them to be tasty, have a great texture, and pack a ton of nutrients and calories into a small package.
The barbecue is sweet and tasty, and reminds you of something that you would find slathered on a slow smoked pig at your local barbecue joint. The Italian is zesty with a good pepperoni and tomato flavor that would be great atop a large pizza.
The sandwiches come in an MRE-style foil pouch and are shelf stable for 36 months from date of manufacturing if stored at 80 degrees or less and can be stored at 100 degrees for 6 months.
These are awesome for a quick lunch on the lake while fishing, a quick pick me up while hiking, and as a supplement to your emergency food stores.
They can be eaten at room temperature just as they are out of the pouch, or they can be heated in an MRE heater, submerged in boiling water, warmed in a toaster oven, or nuked in a microwave if you prefer.
Each barbecue sandwich contains 290 calories, with 80 calories from fat and 41 grams of carbs. The Italian contains 320 calories, with 120 calories from fat and 39 grams of carbs. Each sandwich also contains vitamin A, iron, and calcium to provide extra fuel for the road.
I remember tasting ready to eat sandwiches at the Pentagon almost 10 years ago when they were still in development, and the Bridgford offerings we tested were a far cry from those soggy and tasteless prototypes.
These were moist where they were supposed to be and contained all of their contents inside the bread covering. The bread was sweet and fluffy. All in all, these tasty treats will be going with me on many of my upcoming outings. For the price, less than a $5 footlong at your favorite sub shop, I may even grab one for a quick lunch on a busy day. I’ll even be adding a box or two to my emergency food stores for those pesky zombies. They’re coming; I know it.
