Jack Rice Finally Got His Gun.

Congratulations to Jack Rice of Marysville, CA who finally was able to get his gun. Jack won our gun drawing in July for the Walther PPQ. Since Jack lives in California, and the PPQ has not been approved for sale in California, we had to swap him out a Smith & Wesson M&P compact in .40 cal. Because of a maintenance shutdown of the Smith & Wesson factory, it took a little while for the gun to actually ship. Add to that California’s 15 day waiting period, and it has taken Jack a little while to collect his prize. He has it in his hands now and reports that it handles house loads much better than a Glock and he likes the adjustable back straps and sights better too. Glad to hear it and congratulations again.

A Hunt to Remember

I yelled to Mike, “What did Jordan say”!  “I’ve got a dead Oryx” was Mike’s reply.

This hunt, like many others, was years in the making and almost didn’t happen. You see, working for the State of California, I was forced to take three furloughs per month and wasn’t going to apply for the Oryx hunts on the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) for the first time in over ten years due to finances. Then on the last day of the application period for the 2010/2011 hunts, I decided I wasn’t going to let a year pass without applying. I mean the odds were long and I more than likely wasn’t going to get drawn anyway. Wrong! I drew a tag for February 2011 on the Stallion Range and wasn’t sure if I should be happy or very concerned about the big chunk of change I had just spent on the tag. Well, I decided I was going to be happy and what the heck, I had ten months to save for the hunt, so game on!   Continue Reading

My boyfriend and I love to go shooting. When he first heard I liked guns, he asked me on our first date to go shooting with him and some friends. I impressed him by shooting his AR-15 better than him. He really liked when I pulled out my Glock, and it was the same Glock he had too. We are perfect for each other.

Nestled by the campfire, I finished the last of a very tasty steak. It seems that no matter what you cook it always tastes better when cooked over a campfire.  Easing back in my folding chair, I became somewhat hypnotized by the flames of the campfire jumping and flickering around the slowly burning logs.  I was tired, dead tried, but a good tired.  I had just finished up a long day on my water trap line.  I had been trapping high country beaver and muskrats.  There had been a lot of beaver activity, and to my surprise quite a lot of muskrat, as well as some mink and raccoon sign.  Tomorrow, promised to be a very productive day.  Enjoying the warmth of the fire, my mind wandered back to beaver ponds, marshes, and streams I have trapped over the last 50 years. The blacktail deer is considered to be a subspecies of the mule deer by many.  It was originally considered that the blacktail bucks had bred whitetail does creating what we call the mule deer of today.  However with the evolution of DNA testing, it is now considered that it was the whitetail bucks breeding blacktail does which gave us the much larger mule deer as we know it today.  One quick web search will provide you with a lot of information on the subject.  I’m not a scientist, but I’m having a hard time figuring out why it is called a subspecies when it was the originating breed.  The one thing that I do know about the Columbia blacktail is that they are extremely challenging and exciting to hunt.    Continue Reading

Jason and I just returned from north of the Arctic Circle hunting Barren Ground caribou. Talk about an unreal trip! We went with a new outfitter and we were very optimistic due to our lengthy outfitter vetting process, referral acquisitions and the extensive and multi-faceted process that we go through to make the final decision on who we will hunt with. We had high-hopes that we would be able to add another great addition to our WTA portfolio of outfitters and only heaven knows how many times we have had those same “High-Hopes”, only to end up very disappointed! Well that wasn’t the case with this outfitter! After months, days and hours of time and effort going through the exhausting process of; “Hmmm, Which Outfitter Should I Hunt or Fish With”, we discovered that we had definitely chosen the right outfitter. Not only had we chosen the right outfitter, we absolutely hit one “Out of the Park”! It was a GRAND SLAM! We had the trip of a lifetime! Continue Reading

No matter what we do anymore it seems that we have a bunch of stuff to take with us. Even a simple day hike leaves us with snacks, a camera, iPod, sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and who knows what else. In addition to all of our stuff, we have to carry our ubiquitous water bottle. I recently cleaned out the back seat of my car and there were dozens of empty plastic water bottles stuffed under the seats and on the floor. Continue Reading

Since it was designated as the official pistol of the U.S. Military 100 years ago, the Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol has been often imitated, derided, discarded and ultimately vindicated. Every handgun designed in the last 100 years has had to stand beside the 1911 for examination and every one has been found wanting in comparison.

Sturm Ruger & Co. was founded in 1949 and has been making high quality firearms ever since. It only seems right that this venerable gun maker should celebrate the 100th anniversary of the most venerated pistol in history by creating their own take on it. Continue Reading
