From all of us at Sportsman’s News Magazine, we offer you and your families our warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas. May God bless all of you and may you each receive your heart’s desire this Christmas.

“And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

Sleepily I rubbed my eyes again and tried to stifle yet another yawn as I watched steadily out the window, my eyes moving across the horizon. This was the last day we could hunt pronghorn antelope during Utah’s season and I really was hoping to see even a small buck! The last day we had been able to go out, we had seen a lot of other wildlife including a rattlesnake, wild mustangs, a badger and a golden eagle, but no antelope… Fifteen minutes later my dad turned down a side road towards a standing windmill. I continued looking and out of the dawn an antelope materialized. I jumped up in excitement and exclaimed to my dad the discovery. I turned to him and saw he was slowing down very slightly so he could look through the binoculars, but hadn’t yet stopped. Something was different about the antelope’s horns, but we couldn’t quite figure out what it was exactly. Continue Reading

Hanukkah Sameakh!

Sportsman’s News would like to wish all of our Jewish friends a warm, happy, and healthy Hanukkah. For those of you who are not Jewish, read about the tradition of Haunakkah below.

From Wikipedia: Hanukkah , also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BC. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical Menorah consists of eight branches with an additional raised branch. The extra light is called a shamash and is given a distinct location, usually above or below the rest. The purpose of the shamash is to have a light available for use, as using the Hanukkah lights themselves is forbidden.

From About.com:

The Hanukkah Story

In 168 B.C.E. the Jewish Temple was seized by Syrian-Greek soldiers and dedicated to the worship of the god Zeus. This upset the Jewish people, but many were afraid to fight back for fear of reprisals. Then in 167 B.C.E. the Syrian-Greek emperor Antiochus made the observance of Judaism an offense punishable by death. He also ordered all Jews to worship Greek gods.

Jewish resistance began in the village of Modiin, near Jerusalem. Greek soldiers forcibly gathered the Jewish villages and told them to bow down to an idol, then eat the flesh of a pig – both practices that are forbidden to Jews. A Greek officer ordered Mattathias, a High Priest, to acquiesce to their demands, but Mattathias refused. When another villager stepped forward and offered to cooperate on Mattathias’ behalf, the High Priest became outraged. He drew his sword and killed the villager, then turned on the Greek officer and killed him too. His five sons and the other villagers then attacked the remaining soldiers, killing all of them.

Mattathias and his family went into hiding in the mountains, where other Jews wishing to fight against the Greeks joined them. Eventually they succeeded in retaking their land from the Greeks. These rebels became known as the Maccabees, or Hasmoneans.

Once the Maccabees had regained control they returned to the Temple in Jerusalem. By this time it had been spiritually defiled by being used for the worship of foreign gods and also by practices such as sacrificing swine. Jewish troops were determined to purify the Temple by burning ritual oil in the Temple’s menorah for eight days. But to their dismay, they discovered that there was only one day’s worth of oil left in the Temple. They lit the menorah anyway and to their surprise the small amount of oil lasted the full eight days.

This is the miracle of the Hanukkah oil that is celebrated every year when Jews light a special menorah known as a hanukkiyah for eight days. One candle is lit on the first night of Hanukkah, two on the second, and so on, until eight candles are lit.

Last June I received a phone call from my excited 16 year old cousin, Preston, who explained to me that he had finally drawn the youth only either sex elk hunt in October.  This was a hunt that he unsuccessfully tried to draw for five years.  Preston has been hunting with me for the last eight years and has become one of my regular hunting partners.  The first time I took him hunting he was just eight years old and it was one of the coldest hunts I’d ever been on. It was a late December cow hunt, and despite the cold he stuck right by my side without complaint for three days. Although we did not see any elk for those three days, the sparkle in his eye and his excitement never wavered.  Preston had to return to school, so he missed seeing me bring down a cow the next day, but when I called him with the good news I could tell by his excitement he was hooked! Well, the 2012 season is not exactly here, but if you are serious about putting a hunting plan in place and then executing that plan, then the time to do that is now.   It has truly amazed me how many hunters have called this fall to try to find a last minute tag, as if September is the best time to start thinking about the hunting season.  So what I want to do in this article is get you thinking about your 2012 season and help you start the process of planning your hunting schedule for next year.  There isn’t enough space today to talk about every aspect of your hunting plan, so I want to focus on two main areas, which are your application strategy and landowner tags.   Continue Reading

King salmon fishing has a mystique all its own.  The allure of hooking into the largest of the salmon family as they enter freshwater is nothing short of exhilarating and being able to accomplish that feat from the shoreline, even more so.  Well, that is exactly what was in store for Kevin Orton and I as we made our way the first week of August in pursuit of the big boys with Josh Hughes and Kingfisher’s Perch on the Klutina River in the famous Copper River Valley of Alaska.

Now, I know that all of you fishermen that have had the chance to frequent Alaska and other areas to fish for king salmon know the ropes pretty well, but I want to lay a little background for those that are still sitting on the fence and need a little more information that will hopefully get them on their way to one of the most exciting ventures of their lifetime.  So let’s lay-out a little more information here for the novice. Steelhead.  For anglers who have left the warm comfort of home and ventured out to brave the elements, the word implies sweet memories of screaming fly reels, bent rods, strained back muscles, cold clear water and remote wild places.  Recently on a trip to Yakutat in southeast Alaska to target silver salmon, I was fortunate enough to float the famous Situk River.  As the drift boat slowly slid into the cold clear water at Nine Mile Bridge my mind went rushing back to a trip several years ago when I floated the Situk in search of a different quarry, steelhead.  It was the first of many trips to Alaska and one of those unforgettable times in my fishing journey. I have talked to many people who have made the trek to Alaska for brown bear and heard their wonderful stories about those successful hunts on Kodiak Island or the peninsula with monster bears everywhere which turns out to be more like bear shopping than hunting.  These stories used to be what made me want to follow in these guy’s shoes and put one of those huge bruins on the ground for myself. Like a pistol firing at the start of a race, the first shots of Wisconsin’s gun opener cracked the crisp mid-November air signifying the season had officially begun. A surge of excited energy filled my body knowing I was in a good spot to capitalize on a buck that either wasn’t yet aware of the current situation, or was fleeing the orange army that floods our woods every year. I was also excited to be testing final production samples of our now-released Viper HS riflescope and Viper HD binocular  – Both of which were going to perform top-notch from everything I could tell during time spent at the range prior to the hunt.
