No matter what we do anymore it seems that we have a bunch of stuff to take with us. Even a simple day hike leaves us with snacks, a camera, iPod, sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and who knows what else. In addition to all of our stuff, we have to carry our ubiquitous water bottle. I recently cleaned out the back seat of my car and there were dozens of empty plastic water bottles stuffed under the seats and on the floor. Continue Reading

Performance, Comfort & Quality:

By Isaac Aleman
With the variety of packs on the market today, it can become difficult to make a final decision on which pack will best meet your needs.  These days are a far cry from my youth and the hunts that I remember with my father.  ATV’s and horses weren’t an option and dad didn’t care for overnighters, so everything became a day hike/death march.  We were out of the truck before sun up with nothing but ammo, apples and sardines in our pockets and a canteen over the shoulder.  Time and distance were of no consideration.  Dad shot the first buck with antlers, so I never knew if I would end up hiking two miles or twelve.  What amazes me to this day is dad would always drag the entire carcass all the way back to the truck.  With the luxury of a GPS, I have gone back into some of those spots and found that dad actually pulled some of those deer over seven miles off the hill and didn’t waste a scrap!  Problem was, by the time we arrived at the truck, I felt like I could eat the entire deer.  Starvation and dehydration don’t seem to fully describe the way I felt at the end of those days. Field testing a new pair of boots is always very tough for me because of years of poor foot care while in the military. I have a relatively standard foot size in a 10 with a standard D width. So, needless to say, most boots with good design should fit me fairly well, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Hot spots, blisters, and my high arches make for finding a comfortable boot very expensive along with days of sore feet.

Any guy can relate to snickering a bit when they see some guy walking around with a sissified man bag or murse as we have come to call them. But at the same time, we all know that there are moments when we need to carry more items than comfortably fit in our pockets that we have been a little envious that our wives or significant others get to carry a purse to contain all the things they need to take with them on a daily basis.

Field Tested

I had just gotten off the phone with the outfitter who would be guiding me on this coming May’s spring bear hunt and during our conversation, he asked me if I knew how to snow shoe. I responded with a very confident “YES” and we moved on through the rest of our conversation. His final comment was “make sure you bring your snow shoes, you’re going to need them on this hunt”.
