When I was growing up, Zeiss was the most prominent name in optics. They had the best glass out there and if you were any sort of hunter, you had better have yourself some Zeiss. Well, it is now 2010 and Zeiss is again coming on very strong with new technology and top of the line products. The PRF Laser Rangefinder is no exception.

With hunting season just around the corner, it is time to take to the field and start looking for that next trophy of a lifetime. Quality optics is essential to success in the field and there probably isn’t a better known name in optics than Nikon. Nikon has been making top of the line camera equipment for over 90 years and a good majority of professional photographers depend on their glass for their livelihood. When you take to the woods with nothing but a trophy animal on your mind, I’m sure that you already know quality optics is the key to spending hours behind your glass and finding a trophy of a lifetime. I’m sure that there are many of you out there that feel you are capable of holding your binoculars still enough to do a good job of glassing with ten power binoculars. I still carry mine around my neck, but I have become a major believer in sitting behind my ten power binoculars mounted on a tripod for afternoon and evening glassing sessions. I don’t feel the fatigue of hold my glasses up and I do a much better job of gridding the mountain while I look for trophies. The results have been many more trophies found.

Anyone who has done much shooting with their AR platform rifle has wanted a great tactical scope to extend the range out to a distance. Most AR shooting is done at under a hundred yards, but the flat trajectory of the 5.56/.223 Remington cartridge makes it a great shooting round for distances up to 1,000 yards.

Growing up as a child shooting open sights on our .22′s made hundred yard shots seem like we were true experts when we connected. As we got older, we graduated to bigger calibers and learned how to acquire a target in a scope and then three and four hundred yard shots became possible. Eight years as a U.S. Marine and hundreds of hours on the long range with quality optics made thousand yard shots a possibility. This can only be done consistently with a lot of practice and understanding your weapon and scope.

It is easy to get good optics today if you have thousands of dollars to spend. You can’t go wrong buying the highest end optics out there, but if you have limited funds to spend you have to be careful. If you are a serious hunter you know the edge that quality optics gives you in the field and each of us wants to get the best we can afford.

Buying a pair of binoculars is a big decision and has the ability to set you back a lot of money. You can spend as little or as much as you would like and it seems that the top end just keep going up and up and up. It took me many years and a half a dozen pair of inexpensive binoculars to finally decide to buy the best that I could afford. Had I done that the first time around, I wouldn’t have needed to spend twice as much over the long haul. My philosophy with binoculars is buy the best there is the first time around and you will only cry once.

So, come July I start spending numerous days on the mountains looking at antler development and naming possible critters to chase come opening day. This makes me a stickler on quality optics, as hours behind a marginal pair will greatly reduce your desire to spend much time looking through them. You will seldom find a trophy animal and get within range by just driving around. A great vantage point early in the morning and late in the evening is essential to finding and patterning a trophy to harvest. At Sportsman’s News, we get a chance to field test the majority of products available to the public and we get to do it in a real hunting environment and not just looking through them at the stores or in the parking lot during prime daylight hours. Those twilight hours and estimating point measurements at a half mile are the true test of a quality optic.
