As I peered over the edge, I had a great view of the open hills as well as the willow choked bottoms and fringe which I hoped would hold a good whitetail buck worthy of my Wyoming tag. I had just settled in for the afternoon when deer suddenly exploded out of their beds on the fringes and weaved back and forth through the cover with their white flags waiving high in the air. My guide yelled “Buck”! I immediately went into kill mode and started searching for the shooter buck. He blew through every opening in true whitetail fashion. I could see the other deer heading for thick cover as my guide shouted out the yardage. I quickly adjusted my hold and squeezed the trigger as the big buck piled up from a full run. What a rush! Good things come in small packages, so the adage goes. To prove that point, Springfield Armory has taken all that is great about the 1911 and shrunk it down into a subcompact that retains all of the features we love and eliminates all that we dislike about the 1911. Continue Reading

Like a pistol firing at the start of a race, the first shots of Wisconsin’s gun opener cracked the crisp mid-November air signifying the season had officially begun. A surge of excited energy filled my body knowing I was in a good spot to capitalize on a buck that either wasn’t yet aware of the current situation, or was fleeing the orange army that floods our woods every year. I was also excited to be testing final production samples of our now-released Viper HS riflescope and Viper HD binocular – Both of which were going to perform top-notch from everything I could tell during time spent at the range prior to the hunt. No matter what we do anymore it seems that we have a bunch of stuff to take with us. Even a simple day hike leaves us with snacks, a camera, iPod, sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and who knows what else. In addition to all of our stuff, we have to carry our ubiquitous water bottle. I recently cleaned out the back seat of my car and there were dozens of empty plastic water bottles stuffed under the seats and on the floor. Continue Reading

Since it was designated as the official pistol of the U.S. Military 100 years ago, the Model 1911 .45 ACP pistol has been often imitated, derided, discarded and ultimately vindicated. Every handgun designed in the last 100 years has had to stand beside the 1911 for examination and every one has been found wanting in comparison.
Sturm Ruger & Co. was founded in 1949 and has been making high quality firearms ever since. It only seems right that this venerable gun maker should celebrate the 100th anniversary of the most venerated pistol in history by creating their own take on it. Continue Reading

Having served in the Marines, I can tell you all of the weaknesses of the military Meal Ready to Eat (MRE) or as we called them, three lies in one.
First of all, they are heavy. Because they are prepared food that has been hermetically sealed in pouches, you end up carrying all of that water weight with you. At 8 pounds per gallon, this is a heavy proposition. Next, they are bulky.
For prolonged periods in the outdoors where water is plentiful, nothing beats food that has been dehydrated.

When John Moses Browning designed the Model 1911 in 1908, for the US Army, it was called the “greatest gun in the world.” Not much has been changed on that original design in 100 years, but some fine tuning and advances in craftsmanship have resulted in some beautiful weapons. Continue Reading

This question will illicit many different answers among a group of hunters. If you live east of the Rockies and most of your time is spent in a tree stand, then you can probably easily answer this question with a no. If you are out to experience the love of nature and you are just looking to fill your freezer with some tasty elk or venison, it is doubtful that you will want to spend the money or carry the extra weight. However, if you spend most of your time in the west and putting a trophy on your wall is the main focus of time spent in the field, you must have a spotting scope with you at all times. Having less recoil from your 12-gauge shotgun doesn’t only mean quicker target acquisition, it also means that you will practice with it more frequently creating greater proficiency.
Blackhawk has teamed with Knoxx Industries to create a collapsible stock that takes the abuse out of shooting your shotgun for long periods. The SpecOps Recoil Reducing Stock from Knoxx Industries, cuts felt recoil by as much as 85 percent. The five position adjustable stock offers the ability for shooters of all sizes to use the gun to which it is attached. The stock creates 11.25-15.25 inches length of pull which allows it to be used with a variety of tactical and load bearing vests, and also makes it ideal for home defense by shortening the overall profile and adapting to whoever needs to use the gun.
