It is a great way to combine some of my favorite things whitewater kayaking and backpacking style camping.  There are some areas that you can access this way that there are not even any trails and the ruggedness of the terrain and canyons make travel by land nearly impossible.  The guys from Liquid Logic Kayaks have done the Grand Canyon completely self supported with only kayaks and no rafts.  This is a major accomplishment.  They were the first to do it  and now they have done it a few times.

Self contained whitewater kayak camping forces you to rough it since you cannot take as much as you would when backpacking.  Also having as light of boat as possible is important when the difficulty goes up to say class 4 or better.  My bachelor party was a 3 day kayak camping trip with my best friend on the Klamath River.

sounds like a blast and definitely roughing it.Wink

When I was younger – roughing it was the standard to live by.  Now – I don't plan to rough it.  If I'm roughing it, something has gone terribly wrong and I'm stuck in my truck somewhere broke down or buried in the mud and/or sand.  I now plan to sleep good and not wake up where my neck, back and hips are killing me.

I used to head out of town with my buds on motorcycles with a sleeping bag, coat, fly-rodand twenty bucks.  That was so much fun.  Doing that now would be painful.  Besides I couldn't fill a motorcycle gas tank on twenty bucks and get back home.

Well…you can stay in a lodge, in an RV, in a tent…but roughing it is sleeping under the stars with minimal equipment…say a sleeping bag, maybe a tarp, a light source, minimal food and fishing gear. Catch fish or go hungry!

I like the catch fish or go hungry part. only I'm not so fond of fish.Wink

I was too hard headed to listen to the basketball coach. I smoked for 57 years. I quit smoking a year and a half ago, but I have had C.O.P.D. for several years. I'm paying for it now.

That is great that you quit. keep taking care.

I am sorry to hear that, Cecil.  COPD is nothing to fool with.  Take care of yourself.

BTW, I have a family member in Bogalusa – is that anywhere near you?

As far as I'm concerned, the whole "roughing it" thing comes down to necessity.  I mean, if I don't have to rough it then I don't want to.  I had enough of that early in my life and I just don't place much value on trying to get by with just the barest essentials.

When you get to be 72 and have arthritis you don't want things to get too rough.SurprisedLaugh

Yeah, I get it, my friend.  I've already got some in both hands and one knee and it just plain hurts when I get cold.  If I knew I'd live this long I would have taken better care of myself. Confused

The issue with me is that some of the most spectacular country in Colorado is only accessible if you backpack in several miles.  The wilderness area that abuts the private land where I hunt elk is a good example – the accessible areas are really beautiful but if you hike in a few miles there is no sign than anybody has ever been there before.  It's a real peaceful and secluded feeling and I love it.  You can't make it in and back out in one day so if you go in, you have to be ready to camp with whatever you humped in with you.

Other than doing something like that, I'm happy with some level of civilization.  Laugh
