Usually when you fly fish you are not compeating for the same space as the heavy tackle guys.  You can fish a lot shallower riffles with a fly rod.

I have not tried fly fishing on the Rogue, but I have talked to a few people around here that have a blast doing it.

I hate when they cast over my kayak on purpase especially when I am attempting a technical rapid. I always give plenty of room and avoid paddling near fisherman.  Somtimes I even let them know I will be running the rapid in a few min.  Then I wait for the line to be in and go for it just to have someone cast over me.  A big barbed salmon hook in the skin would be no fun at all.

Any anglers from Southern Oregon out there?

I am just getting back into fishing after 30 years of no fishing. In my youth I always fished small streams for trout and Central California lakes for bass. Now I live near the Rogue River in Southern Oregon and I am trying my hand at steelhead fishing. This is completely different from any kind of fishing I have ever done before. Having a great time on the river though.

I hope there are some other members in this area that can post some of their experiences on the Rogue.

The people are definitely the worst part of steelhead and salmon fishing on the Rogue.  There is lots of fights, drinking, and litter.  I usually witness it from my kayak.

That is a bummer, that a few could ruin a good day of fishing.

the locals are the worst

Seems like the fishing has not been good on the Rogue River in a while.  I think it has been from the dam removals in the last few years.  Has anyone else noticed this or has it started to pick up?

I live in GP to.  I love to fly fish for trout.  Above Chinook park is good, also Holy Water right below Lost Creek Lake is an awesome fly sishing only catch and release stretch of the Rogue.  Pretty much anywhere on the river is good I like to fish in the summer when it is warm and I can wade in just shorts and sandals.

Wow! Two rivers I haven't fished for steelies in about 30 years. I now live in NM, but sure do miss Oregon fishing, and some of Or as well. I used to fish the Alsea and tribs off it alot growing up. The N Santiam, because of where I lived is what I hit the most.

I learned how to fish on the Deschutes and Rogue Rivers.  For steelhead, drifting a small bit of roe seemed to be extremely productive.  Many anglers had success fly fishing as well.  The setup was pretty simple and mainly focused on looking for spots to drift the roe near runs.  Both of these rivers were great locations to learn the joys of fishing as a young kid.  Good luck battling some of those fish!
