Here it is….I found this when I learned that ruger was discontinuing the P97 and wanted to know more.  But I think this is a great article that puts things into perspective.  enjoy.

I like the articles guys…I know moosad ayoob (spelling) did an article on his police days about cheap guns and expensive guns and how in the end there really was no difference.  I'll see if I can find it again.

Just wont to put this out there…for those looking to buy.  It's not a CCW gun, way to bulky, heavy and awkward and is kind of uncomfortable even with a standard unkle mikes holster that I bought for it.  A nightstand gun or truck gun….yes, throw it in your pack…sure.

This is a great article.  I really like the comments at the bottom.

One that stood out to me was:

"One other thing I would like to say before I shut up. Guns are a lot

like automobiles. Most of us drive the nicest one that we can afford. I

never try to talk a customer into a higher priced gun if I feel he/she

can’t afford it. I would much rather sell someone a Hi-point and have

them be protected now than have them trying to save for something more

expensive and possibly never being able to purchase it. Shouting “wait, I

am going to buy a gun next month” at an assailant has little chance of

stopping them. I’m just saying."

Everyone knows that a Hi-Point it not the best, but it works.  You have to break it in to get all the kinks out of it.  I wouldn't mind having one as a back-up gun!

I'm not really ready to go out and buy one but Scott Mayer is a common-sense, no BS guy and he checked the pistol out as thoroughly as any gun has ever been checked out.  It would clearly be a reasonable choice for an inexpensive, no-frills, reliable truck gun or HD piece.  At least you would never have to worry about putting scratches on it. Confused

Just for information's sake, though – here's a good article written by a guy I know and whose opinion I respect.  He has good things to say about HiPoints.

From what I read, Hi-Points have a pretty good reputation for going bang when you need them to.  But I think they're one of those things you buy but don't tell anybody about.   (Eh?)

why?

I picked one up to hold at a gun show once, they are so odd.  The trigger well is tiny, and the grips seem over sized and slide was huge as well, it just felt like a cheap gun like it would blow up in my hand.  And the price was about the same, it was like 95.00.

A guy in my CHL class had one and it malfunctioned so badly they had to give him a gun the instructor brought.

They are cheap….and until the magazine get broke in they will double feed alot (hint:  load your magazine full the day before and leave it over night), but other then that I've had no issues with mine, other then when recoil managment is an even bigger issue as that slide come back hard.  I wouldn't use it as a carry gun or for put my life on the line with it.  But its fine for a plinker.

There are definitely several S&W wheelguns on my list to get eventually, as finances allow.  I have  never fired a S&W that I didn't like.

I'm with you there, James.  When it comes to revolvers, I think S&W broke the code.  My all-time favorite wheel gun is a Model 15 Combat masterpiece.

Everything about that piece is just plain right.

But not always American owned. From 1987 to 2001 Smith and Wesson was owned by a British engineering firm.
