Congratulations to Mulegray, who we selected as the winner of an Alpen Optics 788 spotting scope. Mulegray was randomly selected from among users who posted in this topic of the forum. Mulegray, please send me your shipping address to info@sportsmansnews.com.

I have a Barska 20-60 x60 Angled, and it works good enough for me for Deer hunts on my own land. I really don't do a whole lot of hunting, i originally bought the scope to use to see my targets up to 100 yards and more. I actually have one target set at 400 yards which is now a 8" metal "ringer" painted white. I sadly found that with my eyes and this scope i can see "hits" on the 25 yard very well, at 50 yards i have difficulty and at 100 yards forget about it. I guess i need a 200 power to see my "hits" at 100 yards LOL.

I have switched out my targets @100yds, 200yds and 400yds to the metal "ringers" just to keep in practice, and only will use a paper target at those ranges for sighting in a new rifle and/or scope. I have a pistol range setup as well.

I retract my earlier statement about not needing one.  I went scouting yesterday in a new area and found that a spotting scope will work there and will save me a lot of time and energy.  Time to start thinking about one I guess

I have never carried a spotting scope while hunting, but we had on at our adventure camp in Montana and it was awesome to watch the bighorn heards accross the river from camp.  a lot of record rams were taken in the valley.  the camp was Camp Bighorn.

Yeah i got my eye on a Spotting scope from Harbor Freight, only 39.99 with a coupon.. heh I am still saving up. haha

I've got one. Don't waist your money. I use it at the range sometime, but even there my vortex bions work better. I use the little tripod that came with it alot for timer shots with my camera. Its a nice looking scope, but looking through it is a different story. Dialed out to the lowest power is about all I use it for now.

Even though this one isn't real high end you'd be better off than the HF 39.99 model, but even better, pinch your pennies and hold out for this one. http://www.sportsmanswarehouse…../cat100751

Great review Dan…as always.

cool, thanks for the heads up!

It is interesting to read everyones post and beliefs on spotting scopes.   It is the most important piece of equipment in my pack whenever I go hunting.   I like to trophy hunt and being able to get a good look at the animal prior to burning valuable energy is essential when you are spending hundreds of days in the field.   I look for vantage points to glass from whereever I hunt because I know it gives me the best advantage of harvesting the biggest animals.  I have got to see them before they see me and get in position to make the shot.   It usually works as planned unless I get someone without a spotting scope and using these tactics wandering through the woods aimlessly just hoping to find something big.  This is my style and not for everyone and I enjoy the challenge of all the different types of hunters out there.  It makes my trophies truly valuable to me.

Angled or straight?  I am a straight scope guy.  Never have been able to adjust to the angled and find animals quickly, but I have friends that are exactly the opposite.   The angled does allow you to have a shorter tripod which wiill weigh much less.   You can even lay it on your pack if you want to totally eliminate the tripod.   I will carry the extra weight of the tripod.  I like to be comfortable when I spot because I spend 4-6 hours a day behind my glass during prime time.

Good luck out there this year boys.

I don't need a spotting scope for hunting. In most of the places where I hunt the timber is too thick to see very far. But I definately need one at the shooting range. I have a cheap one but I wear glasses and cant see very well with it.

I have one of those cheap-o Winchester spotting scopes.  I pretty much just use it at the range as well… though I would like to get a good one to use hunting.

I bought my one and only spotting scope a few years back from SW, it's an Alpen 15-45 by 60. I bought it originally to use at the range but I find it's small enough to fit in my daypack and is plenty clear enough for my eyes.

It takes some getting use to but I find it more comfortable to look through. I think you'd enjoy the angled a lot if you go that route

Great article and advice from YB.  I have a very cheap spotting scope and cuss every time I use it at the range.  In all the hunting I have done in the past a spotting scope would not have done me any good.  The woods are just to thick to get a vantage point or to see into.  However, I think this years hunt will be different as it is in an area I have never hunted and it is mostly sage, pinion, and juniper.
