I hear them every once in a while they get my dogs going, but I don't know where I would go to hunt them around here.

Im sure you could get away with it but are laws around here state no discharging a firearm within city limits.  I am not supposed to even shoot my bow in citylimits because it is considered a missile.  THat doesnt stop any of us but not sure on some of my neighbors if they saw me head to the arroyo with a rifle.

I wonder if the restrictions there are a result of the large numbers of ex-New Yorkers who moved there when the city was starting up.  I can remember going there in the '90s and regularly earing New York accents.  Of course, I can't say things are much better here, if at all.

Sunday afternoon I stopped at a red light flanked by a McDonalds, a Starbuck and a grocery store. So it is fairly close to town in a heavily settle area with lots of homes and schools. Across the light was a golf course parking lot bsseling with people and traffic. As I waited at the light 4 coyotes just mosied through the parking lot amounf the people and traffic like they had just played 18. It was funny watching the golfers and amzing at the coyotes boldness and casual dimeanor. Just behind the golf course is a desert area with a big wash ending at a long wide dry dam. I think I'llbe checking the unit maps to see if I can bow hunt back there. Hee Hee. I hope so.Wink

wow…and no one noticed, crazy.  Maybe its soem of those shaper shifter people who just got done playing 18 holes :)

Oh there were golfers all over stopping to look, but the yotes didn't seem to care.

Are you allowed to use an Air-rifle?  I came across this video today:

Coyote shot with .25 Caliber Benjamin Marauder Air Rifle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..lf=mh_lolz

I would assume as long as you are in close ranges and hit the coyote in the head you should be okay…?!

Check your local laws. Laws vary, not only from state to state but from town to town. I had a neighbor call the police and turn me in for shooting a rabbit in my back yard. The police came and checked me out. I was still outside and had the rabbit and the airrifle in my hands. Rabbit season was open and it was not illeagle to shoot an airrifle in town or to shoot a rabbit with one, so there was nothing the police could do except leave. In Louisiana coyotes are outlaw animals and can be shot with just about anything that is leagle for you to shoot. But check your local laws.

Get a number of yotes almost ever night behind our house in Anthem, but need to find some places further north of town where it's legal to hunt them with a rifle. Not much success on that front yet, but a long way from giving up!  Well done article by the way!

It's year around here too. Last week while going out to do some plinking I saw one walking down the center divider in the road, it looked like he had just come out of a trailer park.

Do you have a season for them in your area?

Great story and info Collin! You might tell by the name I love it too. Not that I'm an expert, but I've gotten my share. Predator hunting will hone your tracking, shooting and stocking skills almost like no other hunt because these animals are the sneakiest and quietest and much smaller than most big game animals. But, they are greedy and opportunistic making the hunt you while you're hunting them. My advice on top of this great article is just keep trying. For the greatest success, scouting is a must. Coyotes are territorial and packs won't typically cross territory boundaries. If you can hear a pack of coyotes during first light of last light hours, that's the best place to call. If a stand looks good, but you've never seen sign or heard them, it won't likely be the best set up (but they are everywhere). You will find a lone coyote wondering from territory to territory on occassion. But those all at once pack howls, yelping and yipping is their way of rallying the troops (most call it a serenade). There saying "circle up boys and girls, it's time for breakfast or dinner". And when you hear those other far off packs, they are sying the same and also "stay out of our neighborhood". Like any animal, some will make ther way into town to feast on garbage, pet food and pets. Here in AZ I've heard of coyotes taking little dogs right off the leash while mama's taking them for a walk. On the way to church a few weeks ago a coyote ran in front of my truck with a full grown cat in its mouth. If you can find a spot at a legal distance from homes and other structures like the dump you will have some good luck using domestic cat calls and puppy calls. BUT BE CAREFUL. You might call in someones dog or even a pet owner. That happened to me just a few weeks ago. A guy popped out in the brush in the direction I was hunting calling "here kitty". It was funny, but coould have been dangerous if I wasn't paying attention. Bottom line you have to beat there ears, eyes and nose. Its not to far of a stretch for me to be greedy and opportunistic, so think like a coyote and whenever you get a chance watch some video. SW has a great selection. Most of the big name predator hunters come out with a new video each year and you can find some great deals on old ones. Its a good way to get your predator hunting blood pumping too. I wish I could go RIGHT NOW!

Pretty much everytime I've seen a coyote it has been when I don't have a gun… I would really like to get one some day.  They're smart little critters!

I've always just used my 30-06, It's my first rifle so I guess it just doesn't feel the same without it.

I have a .308 for my hunting rifle.  Is a lighter faster bullet the way to go for coyote?

I'm lousy at it, but it's alot of fun. I allways seem to call the ones that come in from my blind spot.
